Dimitri Verhulst

Dimitri Verhulst (b. 1972) is one of the most prominent contemporary Flemish writers. He made his debut in 1999 with a collection of short stories, De kamer hiernaast, which was nominated for the NRC Literature Prize. This was followed in 2001 by the novels Niets, niemand en redelijk stil and Liefde, tenzij anders vermeld. However, at the start of 2006 Verhulst made a real breakthrough with his successful autobiographical novel De helaasheid der dingen, in which he describes his childhood in a marginal family. NRC Handelsblad praised Verhulst as 'one of the greatest, most furious talents in Flemish literature, who is capable of writing a novel in a way that a twenty-first-century Louis Paul Boon would have.'
